Album Set PROMO BOOK (1956)
This is the highly coveted salesman's book for the “Petty Girl” set. The idea was to have 8 albums, 4 under the guise of "Music For The Girl Friend" and 4 as "Music For The Boy Friend." Each sported a different Petty girl drawing. In the set were music by a mix of artists like Artie Shaw, Harry Herman, Bebo Valdez and The Four Aces (for the gals), and Woody Herman, John Graas, Bill Haley & The Comets, and Peggy Lee (for the guys).
In this booklet you got all eight jacket slicks, each custom printed on both the front and on the back with the actual plates for the LP album. All eight are comb-bound in a red binder with a clear acetate cover and hard cardboard back. Needless to say, there were few of these produced for Decca salesmen in the field, and even fewer have survived almost 60 years later.
Reviewing my personal copy of this item, I find that the Booklet is exactly as described in the paragraph above and contains the notation “Printed In U. S. A.” on the front and back of each “slick”. These “slicks” are flexible – not the heavier pasteboard used for LP covers as one might expect. The Booklet in is Excellent condition.
The Booklet is contained within a black colored box such as would be used to house a multi-disc box set of LPs and which has printed on the front “Decca Presents Music For The Boy Friend – Music For The Girl Friend – Featuring The Petty Girl As Presented In Esquire Magazine”. It also says “Printed In U.S.A.” in the lower left corner of the front of the box. The box also has a Cut-out in the center of the box front in the shape of a keyhole with a portion of the Petty Girl artwork from the “He Digs Rock ‘N Roll” LP showing through the cut-out. It appears that a hard cardboard weight slick of that cover has been glued inside the box cover. The back of the top cover is blank. The edge or spine of the box is printed with the slogan "Stop...Look...Now Listen". The box is in Very Good condition, having only 1 broken corner at the lower right on the front cover and a split in the upper back box edge about 5 inches long.
The box set also includes a Promotional LP issued by Decca to showcase 16 individual cuts from the LP grouping. This Promotional LP has a Silver on Black Label that indicates it was pressed in Canada. It and the special promotional paper sleeve both carry the # DL 38014 but the Sleeve indicates it was “Printed In U. S. A.”
The Record itself is in Very Good + condition with excellent Gloss but also carrying some surface scuff marks on 1 side only, that although obvious, do not appear significant enough to affect play. The Sleeve is in Mint condition.
I have seen the USA issue of this Promotional LP and it carries a PINK Decca Label (Pix included above), as is typical of Decca Promo LP's issued in the USA.

Decca DL-38014 - Music For The Boy Friend / Music For The Girl Friend - PINK LABEL PROMO
Material below from an Auction Description
VERY RARE PROMO-ONLY anthology of Decca LPs with PETTY GIRL covers. Original mono pink-label deepgroove Decca press. The obscure 12" cover is a paper sleeve (almost certainly never came with a cardboard jacket) with pictures of all eight Petty Girl LP covers on front, plus larger close-ups of the girls for 6 of the covers (1 on front, 5 on back). Includes three tracks from the album, He Digs Rock N’ Roll: The Saints Rock N’ Roll (Bill Haley), "Roses Never Fade (Mel Williams) and "Partners For Life" (Gloria Mann). Plus tracks by Jeri Southern, Woody Herman, Peggy Lee & others. ALMOST-UNKNOWN RARITY - only found on online reference which provides minimal information.
* VINYL: G - very glossy with some deeper scratches. Overall played well with some soft/medium clicks. THE THREE TRACKS FROM HE DIGS ROCK N’ ROLL PLAY VERY WELL, as do the tracks by the other artists mentioned above. (NOTE: Sometimes stuck on my turntable once on Harry Hermann’s "Count Every Star", and skipped once on Victor Young’s "Ruby", with tone arm at 1 ½ gms. These may be fixable but I cannot guarantee it; nor can I guarantee that there will be no other trouble spots when played on your turntable. So please bid accordingly).
* COVER: Front and Back: VG/VG+ (slight aging, bit tattering at opening). Has two clean 2" splits.
This item sold for $37.66 + $4. S&H in May, 2009
